What springs to mind when you think of Easter?
Fresh starts? New beginnings? For those that are religious, celebrations of the end of lent and rebirth commence. And for many, easter egg hunts and time off spent with family begins.
No matter your reasoning for celebrating the time of year, Easter has become yet another holiday which has fallen victim to more and more consumerism. With an abundance of issues associated with it, like palm oil, meat and dairy, unsustainable cocoa, excess plastic packaging and single-use Easter cards. The list goes on - and there's nothing there we haven't covered before.
This Easter we are going to offer some food for thought and focus primarily on how you can spring into action for an egg-cellent, ethical Easter - no matter what your reasons for celebrating the holiday (We'll stop with the easter puns now...).
The Hunt for Ethical Easter Eggs
Whilst everyones favourite Christmas chocolates are gone and the coconut flavoured choccies are all that remain of the Christmas assortment tubs, it is again time for another sugar surge.
In the UK consumers nibble their way through more than 80 million Easter eggs each year - that's a lot of chocolate, palm oil, sugar, dairy and packaging.
Did you know that 11.5 million tonnes of packaging waste is created each year? When you think of the thin egg shaped layer of chocolate and the branded miniature versions inside the foil-in-plastic-in-cardboard packaging, its easy to see that there is not enough being done to minimise the amount of un-needed packaging being used.
There is however the argument that plastic currently offers protection for Easter eggs, and some forward thinking companies are ensuring this is biodegradable or made from recycled materials.
Branded eggs, often on offer in the supermarkets are somewhat impersonal and almost bought by habit - why not make your own Easter egg? You can choose your own flavours and eliminate any packaging waste!

Okay, no more puns....
But why do we send them in the first place? To show others that we care and are thinking about them in times of celebration? Why not make it more personal and try your hand at making your own cards? Make it a bit more eggs-clusive... okay who are we kidding, there are plenty more puns to come...
