Cotton and more
By far most of our clothing is made from cotton. And there is a story connected to cotton. And it's not a pretty one.
Producing about 1 kg of cotton requires about 20.000 liters of water.
And this has a devastating impact on our fresh water supplies all over the world.
Like the Aral sea, which has almost disappeared nowadays due to the cotton industry.
Consequences can also be seen on the Indus river in India.
Estimations are that 97% of all it's water is used for farming cotton.
Growing cotton also leads to erosion and the poisoning of the soil.
Cotton accounts for ±2.4% of worldwide farming ground and almost 24% of the total worldwide amount of produced insecticides and 11% of pesticides are used for cotton.
And that shows also in our clothing.
Did you know that an average boxer can still contain 10-20 ml of toxic substances?
For example Formaldehyde, a poisonous and carcinogenic substance used in clothing paint.
On the bright side, there are also initiatives that prove it can be done differently.
Like the people from Saint Basics.
