Cotton and more

By far most of our clothing is made from cotton. And there is a story connected to cotton. And it's not a pretty one.

Producing about 1 kg of cotton requires about 20.000 liters of water

And this has a devastating impact on our fresh water supplies all over the world.

Like the Aral sea, which has almost disappeared nowadays due to the cotton industry.

Consequences can also be seen on the Indus river in India.

Estimations are that 97% of all it's water is used for farming cotton.

Growing cotton also leads to erosion and the poisoning of the soil.

Cotton accounts for ±2.4% of worldwide farming ground and almost 24% of the total worldwide amount of produced insecticides and 11% of pesticides are used for cotton.

And that shows also in our clothing.

Did you know that an average boxer can still contain 10-20 ml of toxic substances?

For example Formaldehyde, a poisonous and carcinogenic substance used in clothing paint.

On the bright side, there are also initiatives that prove it can be done differently.

Like the people from Saint Basics.

Saint Basics

Saint Basics is selling shirts, boxers, hipsters and slips. But not how others are doing it.

They wanted to produce their basics only by using the most sustainable materials. And to produce them as ethically as possible.

So all their basics have the GOTS trademark. So you know for sure that pesticides, environmental waste, and sweatshops are being eliminated in the production process.

And Saint Basics is doing something extra on top of that as well.

Some of their basics are made of WOOD.

From the Eucalyptus tree. Which is being processed biologically to Eucalyptus fibers, called Tencel.

Tencel is the lyocell fiber from the house of Lenzing.

This fiber production itself is extremely ecofriendly, due to their closed loop system.

Tencel uses only 4% of the cotton use of water, it has only 5% of the environmental impact cotton has.

So this really is the future!

Textiles of Tencel are more absorbent than cotton, softer than silk and cooler than linen.

So we are big fans of Saint Basics.

Basics with a story.

Basics that make you proud.
