21st June 2018 - The 'First Day of Summer'
It also happens to be part way through the 2018 World Cup
Whether you're celebrating the World Cup or the weather, the season for BBQs, beers and (hopefully) beaches is here!
We hope this post might inspire you to think a little differently about any parties you plan to host (or attend) over the coming months and to make the most out of your summer sustainably. While you soak up the sunshine and bask on the British beaches, hopefully the biggest footprint you'll be leaving this season will be in the sand.
Once upon a time, BBQs consisted of nothing more than beef burgers and hot dogs eaten off flimsy paper plates covered in a mix of ketchup and mustard.
Times have changed and we are all looking for more fun and exciting snacks to enjoy under the summer sun. After all, you can grill almost anything - from peppers and corn to avocados and aubergine. If a BBQ is on your bucket list this summer, why not check out these awesome recipes for vegetarian bbq ideas and get creative!
The Ethical Superstore also have plenty of ideas for keeping your guests' tummies full and your conscience clear - from olives & antipasti to meat free sausages and burgers (psst. don't forget to use the discount below).
Of course, with any event involving food it is important to consider what to do with any waste. We have previously talked about the importance of Food Waste reduction and recycling, and good idea this summer could be to use food scraps to make your own compost.
The Ethical Superstore have a range of products to assist with home composting - (which will also help save money when planting new flowers or veggies in the garden). This guide is full of handy tips to get you started on your very own home composting project!
Warmer weather and sunshine is a great excuse for a cheeky drink (alcohol or not!) with your friends. If beer is your poison of choice, why not opt for a brand a little different from the rest?
Toast source surplus loaves from bakeries and the heel ends of loaves not used by sandwich makers. We love the idea of utilising resources, saving food from landfill and creating something exciting in the process - so much, in fact, that we are pleased to announce that they have kindly extended our Klooker discount code until the end of the summer!
Beach (or garden) parties!
Hosting a party this summer? There is no need to splash out on new garden furniture if you have some old bits and bobs lying around.
Hannah & James at The Number Fifty Nine have up-cycled an old, rusty garden stand into a chic unit for flowers, glasses and tableware! All you need is a can of paint suitable for outdoor furniture and a spark of creativity. They also revamped some garden chairs with fab cushions.
Packing a picnic for the park or the beach? Ditch the disposables (and the plastics).
Whether you're lounging in the garden or sunbathing by the sea, we hope you have found a little inspiration to make some small changes to your summer parties. After all, "to change the world, you've got to throw a better party than those destroying it" (Toast Ale)!
